                  1. Yesterday I got fooled big time by a slick app in the iOS App Store. It all begin when I was casually browsing the game section and saw a Apple story for the "Top games of 2019" Oh, some good games (that apple vetted as they feature them) I thought. WRONG! 1/n

That story was just a list of the games in the top free chart, which I avoid because they are generally not good. But I missed that and it turned into an enlightening experience of how bad things are in the Top Free chart. So I downloaded Paper io 2 2/n

Good reviews, simple mechanics, nice colors. "Beat the competition", nice, a iOS version of paper-io.com? No but more on that later. The first thing you see is a consent screen with a dark pattern. No Agree / Decline? You can decline by clicking "Start Playing" 3/n

Meanwhile in the background, before you have had time to do anything, it has fired off requests 14 requests to 5 different analytics or advertisement companies. Click trough (without consenting) and another ~40 requests and then ads in every space that can fit it. 4/n

So you click away the banner complaining about consent and play a game, and loose in 2 seconds. 30 second forced full screen ad one of the interactive ones for other similarly bad games. If you interact with it at all it will open the App Store at the end with the game. 5/n

And now the consent banner is back again. So you click it to see what's it about. Oh that's not too bad? Only 3 AD companies and 3 analytics? It does not look scrollable and there is free whitespace below. Try scrolling anyways? In total, 20 ad and 5 analytics companies. 6/n

So after all this, you still like the game and can't stand the 30 seconds of forced ads after every game, so you pay a reasonable sum for the ad removal. That removes the ads, but as long as you have *Limit Ad Tracking on in iOS, it will keep bugging you about disabling it. 7/n

Oh I almost forgot, "Beat the competition"? The game was kind of fun until I noticed it's actually not a multiplayer game. They did fool me with giving the bots realistic names and allowing me to pick one. But to their credit, they never actually say multiplayer. 8/n

In the end, it was educative to venture into the "Top Free" slum. Before this, I thought Apple did keep a higher standard and enforce rules like 5.1 developer.apple.com/app-store/review/guidelines/#privacy tl.dr. Avoid Top Free and especially things from Voodoo, as they are apparently infamous for this. 9/9
